Plenary 1 - Mon 9:00 AM | Rob Bowman: Developing a Christian Mind in a Non-Christian World

In this presentation, Christians will be encouraged—and challenged—to develop their minds as disciples of Jesus Christ in faithfulness to the double-love command to love God with all that we are, including our minds, and to love our neighbors. It explains what apologetics is, why it is important for all believers, and how to develop a Christian mind that is equipped to know and defend the gospel.

Plenary 2 - Mon 11:00 AM | Bruce Little: Beauty: In Support of Theism

This presentation argues that any intelligible ascription of beautiful in relationship to a knowable object necessarily requires a universal (transcendent) category of Beauty. Beauty is the objective or universal concept/idea by which it makes possible, and meaningful, a person’s subjective ascription of beautiful as pertaining to an object. Without the transcendent concept/idea of Beauty any discussion of beautiful and ugly would be impossible or at least meaningless. If this is right, any attempt by naturalistic views of reality to account for the phenomenon of the beautiful in the human experience falls into circuity. Theism, however, provides both a consistent and meaningful explanation.

Plenary 3 - Mon 7:00 PM | Erica Carlson: How Science Almost Wrecked My Faith, and Why It Shouldn't Have

In a well-meaning attempt to strengthen my faith, my church’s response to my questions about science almost shattered it. As I speak about science and faith on university campuses around the world, I encounter many seekers and even atheists with a similar story. How can churches constructively engage questioning youth and young adults while avoiding the pitfalls?

7

Plenary 4 - Tue 9:00 AM | Bob Stewart: Did Jesus Claim to be God?

Many cults teach that Jesus never claimed to be God. Often, lay Christians cannot show even that the Bible teaches that Jesus is divine, much less show that he himself taught that he was God. In fact, a number of prominent biblical scholars today believe that Jesus never claimed to be God. So, did Jesus claim to be God? This session will make the case from the Gospels that Jesus taught that he was truly divine and equal to his Father.

Plenary 5 - Tue 10:45 AM | Michele Marsili: Demystifying the Trinity: Understanding the Beautiful Aspects of God

The Trinity uniquely distinguishes Christianity from all other faiths. While beautifully complex, this profound reality is too often misunderstood or avoided by many believers. Yet, exploring the nature of our Triune God deepens our worship and enables us to love Him better with all our minds and hearts. Providing an intellectual defense of the Trinity is vital in apologetics but in our everyday lives, being able to clearly articulate this truth is essential for encouraging fellow believers and strengthening the Church.

Plenary 6 - Tue 7:00 PM | Matthew Tingblad: Breathed Out by God

Second Timothy 3:16 teaches that the Bible is “Breathed out” by God. But how does Scripture demonstrate divine insight? In this talk, Matthew discusses how the Bible bears the markings of a supernatural source. By discovering the remarkably unified nature of Scripture, you will learn that the Bible’s message is best explained by the divine handiwork of God.

Plenary 7 - Wed 9:00 AM | Fazale “Fuz” Rana: God Is an Artist

In this talk, I argue that Scripture supports a striking idea: God is an artist. That lens sheds light on the stunning biodiversity of the natural world and opens the door to a powerful argument for God’s existence based on beauty. I’ll also take on two frequent objections: that evolution can explain our aesthetic sense, and that natural evil calls beauty’s testimony into question.

Plenary 8 - Wed 10:45 AM | David Calhoun: Moving Beauty and Power: Cinematic Depictions of Jesus

Artistic representations of Jesus risk the competing heresies of Arianism and Gnosticism: a hypernaturalized Jesus who is barely more than an enlightened and elevated human on the one hand or an idealized hyperspiritualized figure who weightlessly glides through the physical realm or disappears into abstract symbol. These twin excesses also threaten cinematic depictions of Jesus, which range from the human, all-too-human Jesuses found in Jesus Christ, Superstar (Jewison, 1973) and The Last Temptation of Christ (Scorsese, 1988) on the one hand and the ethereal and enigmatic main character of Jesus of Nazareth (Zeffirelli, 1977). How well can film capture the concrete humanity and disguised divinity of the Incarnation?

7
9
Plenary 9 - Wed 7:00 PM | Tim McGrew: The Forgotten Legacy

The history of apologetics has a deep store of works that are as relevant today as when they were written -- yet we have forgotten most of them. Where should the aspiring apologist begin to look? What can be found there? What do we lose if we chase only after the newest things and forget the old ones? How have they strengthened the faith of inquirers today?

7
9
Plenary 10 - Thu 9:00 AM | Jamie Dew: The Heavens Declare: On the Possibilities and Limitations for General Revelation

Drawing from Psalm 19, this plenary explores the possibilities and limitations of general revelation. It affirms the place of general revelation in apologetics, but argues that its limitations require us to couple it with a far greater form of divine revelation.

7
9
Plenary 11 - Thu 10:45 AM | Daniel Ray: Beauty in the Cosmos: How the Heavens are Telling of the Glory of God

Today we have been given an unparalleled look into the magnificence of the cosmos. With improved astronomical technologies in the last several decades, our vista on the cosmos is unlike any generation of human beings has ever seen before. We will examine how the early Christians understood the heavens, the history of astronomy within the church, what the "glory of God" really means, why the moon provoked a non-religious Artemis II astronaut to talk to a Navy chaplain about what he saw during his trip around the moon, and along the way see some truly breathtaking images of God's heavenly handiwork.

7
9
Plenary 12 - Thu 8:00 PM | Alycia Wood: Is Christianity Good in 2027?

Christianity is not a new belief system, so how can we believe that it is relevant for modern times? How is it possible for an ancient text like the Bible to know anything about what moral system I should follow or to even understand the challenges that day-to-day life brings? In a world where Christianity seems irrelevant, we need to consider whether it presents a winsome vision of human life and flourishing.

7
9
Plenary 13 - Fri 9:00 AM | Mike Strauss: The Beautiful Universe

At times we are overwhelmed by the beauty we see in the universe, perhaps when we look at a breathtaking sunset, or a floral-filled mountain meadow, or a spectacular starry night sky. Yet there is an even more profound and elegant beauty that a scientist might observe by delving deeper into the wondrous workings of nature. This talk will explore the awesome scientific beauty that I see in the universe as a scientist, and discuss some insights we discover about God’s character from that scientific knowledge.

7
9
Plenary 14 - Fri 10:45 AM | Tawa Anderson: Creating & Stewarding Beauty

This session is a multi-media aesthetic apologetic. First, we will illuminate how the natural world demonstrates divine artistry. Second, we will show that humans, as divine image-bearers, innately desire to appreciate and create beauty as well. Third, we will explore art’s ability to stir the human heart to contemplate the transcendent and pursue God. Finally, we will consider how Christians might employ beauty – both divinely-created and human-created – to defend and advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
